DAY 1 INCA TRAIL

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
Cusco – Kilometer 82 – Llaqtapata – Hatunchaca
We start early with a transfer from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, where we’ll stop for breakfast. From there, we head to Kilometer 82 or Piscacucho—the beginning of this exclusive Inca Trail route. The trek offers beautiful views of Mount Veronica (5,900 m / 19,000 ft) and diverse plant and animal life. The terrain is mostly flat at first, passing by the small village of Miskay. After a slight uphill section, we’ll reach a viewpoint overlooking the Llactapata (Patallacta) archaeological site. We’ll then descend into the canyon for a delicious lunch beside the ruins.
The hike continues to our campsite in Hatunchaca, where we’ll spend our first night.

We take our time, enjoying the scenery and visiting sites like the Paucarcancha Inca fortress and Patahuasi. The trail takes us through diverse ecosystems, from highlands to cloud forest and alpine puna. Wildlife such as white-tailed deer may be spotted. We finish the day at the peaceful Llulluchapampa campsite.

You’ll enjoy spectacular views of snow-capped peaks and lush cloud forest. We’ll visit the Inca sites of Runcuraccay and Sayacmarca, both offering incredible vistas. After lunch in Chakicocha, we continue to Phuyupatamarca (3,680 m), where we’ll enjoy a stunning sunset and our first views of Machu Picchu.

After breakfast, we descend the famous Inca steps and explore the archaeological sites of Phuyupatamarca, Intipata, and Wiñay Wayna. This shorter day allows more time for exploration. At Wiñay Wayna, we’ll enjoy a light lunch before heading to the Sun Gate (Intipunku), where we get our first glimpse of Machu Picchu. Then we take a bus down to Aguas Calientes, check into our hotel, and if time allows, relax in the town’s hot springs before dinner.
