Cusco: Tourists can still explore Machu Picchu despite the temporary closure of the mountain due to a landslide. Alternative routes have been set up, allowing visitors to enjoy a panoramic view of the ancient Inca citadel from other strategic vantage points.

After a rockfall led to the closure of access to the Machu Picchu mountain, visitors to the Inca citadel will still be able to embark on tours and capture those classic panoramic photographs, according to the Cusco Cultural Department. Jorge Moya, Director of Culture in Cusco, emphasized that those who purchased tickets for the mountain can access other circuits within the sanctuary. “They won’t miss out on the experience of visiting our ancient llaqta”, he explained, noting that alternative routes have been provided.

The decision to temporarily suspend access to the mountain follows a landslide caused by intense regional rains, which dislodged rocks and trees, blocking an eight-meter section of the path leading to the mountain. As a precaution, authorities have closed Circuit 1—the route that directly leads to the mountain.

Despite this incident, Moya reassured that no damage has been recorded to the cultural heritage or the Inca citadel. Visitors planning to ascend the mountain now have the option to explore other circuits within the sanctuary that offer similarly breathtaking panoramic views. Alternatively, those not interested in these routes can request a refund at the Cusco Cultural Department’s ticket office.

Although the mountain closure occurs during the rainy season—a period when landslides are common—the archaeological site remains safe and accessible. Two circuits have been temporarily suspended due to the rock and tree fall, with the most affected being Circuit 1, which provides access to the mountain. This measure is in place to protect visitors and prevent potential accidents.
